Another Tamil arrested at Katunayake

Another Tamil arrested at Katunayake Featured

A 39-year-old Tamil man from Ampara was arrested on May 30 at the Katunayake airport by the police and the military intelligence upon his return from a job in the Middle East.

The father of one had left for employment in Saudi Arabia in view of the situation of anarchy in eastern province following the break up of Karuna Amman from the LTTE in 2004.

He had returned a few months later, as he was not happy with the employment contract.

When he had come to Colombo in 2005 to go overseas again, he was taken to the fourth floor and questioned over his links with the LTTE.

Later he was released, and due to harassment by military intelligence and police in Ampara, he left for Dubai in 2006.

He returned in 2011 after completing his contract, and again secured a job in the same country in August 2014.

Relatives lodged a complaint HRC /KL 88 / 2015 with the Human Rights Commission office in Kalmunai.

After the new government asked Tamils to return to Sri Lanka, at least 16, most of them on vacation from their jobs in the Middle East, had been arrested at the airport since January.

In addition, several others whose political asylum requests had been turned down and deported, too, were arrested.
