Sri Lanka is having 2,133 HIV/AIDS positive persons, says specialist on communicable diseases Dr. Darshani Wijewickrama.

There are 34 million such cases worldwide, with 23 million of them coming from African countries.

The first AIDS patient in Sri Lanka was reported in 1989.

The number of persons carrying the virus and the number of patients are increasing every year, with a majority being men.

Symptoms could appear even 10 years after contracting AIDS, she said.
