US sends team to probe Rajapaksas’ assets Featured

The US attorney general’s department has sent its officials to Sri Lanka to advise on investigations into illegal assets of the Rajapaksa family and their cronies that had been taken out of the country.

This team has already met with senior officials of the FCID, where agreement was reached to provide support, especially in investigations taking place in the US.

Another objective of the US officials’ visit is to brief the Lankan government about the conduct of a Sri Lankan diplomat in the US during the previous regime.

This person had engaged in activities unsuitable for his position and amassed wealth, US officials have charged.

Foreign affairs minister Mangala Samaraweera has taken steps to seek World Bank assistance to recover assets deposited in foreign banks during the UPFA regime.

During his recent visit to the island, US secretary of state John Kerry told president Maithripala Sirisena and prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that his country would provide the technical support needed to curb corruption.
