The Constitution Council is a 10-member body chaired by the Speaker. The President, the Prime minister and Opposition Leader are automatic appointments to the Constitutional Council.
Other Parliament members appointed are Patali Champika Ranawaka, Wijedasa Rajapakse, John Seneviratne and R. Sampanthan.
Meanwhile, a special meeting has also been convened on June 03 to approve the names of three civil representatives who are to be appointed to the Constitutional Council.
The presidential approval has been granted to the names of Sarvodaya founder - Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, Dr. Radhika Coomaraswamy and former Appeal Court judge - A.W.A. Salam as civil representatives.
Mayadunne slashed
Initially, former Auditor General S. Mayadunne was proposed as one of the civil representatives. However, the finalised list had included the name of Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne instead.
Mayadunne was proposed by the UNP. Although the Opposition had initially agreed, they had later changed their mind.
The Election Commission, Public Service Commission, National Police Commission, Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, Finance Commission, Judicial Services Commission, Delimitation Commission, National Procurement Commission and the Auditing Service Commission fall under the purview of the Constitutional Council.
