When prices were called, Brazil sugar was offered at Rs. 72.90 per kilo, and Indian sugar at Rs. 72.40 per kilo.
The CWE decided to buy the higher quality Brazil sugar, and placed the order.
On the due date, the sugar arrived at the CWE’s McCallum warehouse, but it was found to be Indian sugar.
Operations manager Ranasinghe ordered warehouse manager Buddhika not to accept the consignment.
But, Buddhika disregarded the order and unloaded the sugar, as CWE chairman Kiran Atapattu had ordered so.
The supplier is a close friend of Atapattu.
