Maithri says no to Mahinda, to no-faith motion Featured

President Maithripala Sirisena has stressed that he would not allow his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa to be named as the prime ministerial candidate of either the SLFP or the UPFA.

He made this point known when he met UPFA affiliate party leaders at his residence last night.

Among the participants were Susil Premajayantha, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Dew Gunasekara.

Stressing that the SLFP would not support the no-confidence motion against prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the president asked UPFA leaders to choose between the supporting of the 20th amendment to the constitution or the no-faith motion against the premier.

Meanwhile, at a media briefing at Abhayarama Vihara today, Mahinda faction’s Mahindananda Aluthgamage said a no-confidence motion would be brought against the present government and its prime minister.

He said 85 signatures have already been collected, and that parliament would not be convened under the present regime after June 09.
