The decision has been taken in consideration of the risk that Rajapaksa’s being given nominations from a particular district could be used by his opponents to their advantage.

By bringing him on the national list, voters in the entire country can be won over, and Rajapaksa will also get the chance to addresss political rallies throughout the country.

Rajapaksa had previously decided to contest from Kurunegala district.
