Secretary to the former president Lalith Weeratunga and two others are to be directly indicted in the high court over a misuse of Rs. 620 million of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission money, say attorney general’s department sources.

Along with Watinapaha Somananda Thera, coordinator to the former president, and TRC former chairman Anusha Pelpita, Weeratunga is accused of using the money to distribute Sil clothing to Buddhist devotees four days before the presidential polls.

All three have been interrogated by the FCID.

Instead of being arrested by police, the suspects will be produced before courts before their arrest, say the sources.

This step has been considered after the interim injunction issued by the Supreme Court against the arrest of former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, former minister Basil Rajapaksa, former secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatileke, both of the economic development ministry, and Divi Neguma Department’s director general R.R.K. Ranawaka have been indicted on five charges over the massive financial fraud in the department.

Rajapaksa had ordered the use of the Samurdhi Bank savings for the 2015 presidential election campaign on the pretext of using them for the renovation of homes of Divi Neguma beneficiaries.
