Serious setback in child protection

Serious setback in child protection Featured

Sri Lanka has suffered a serious setback with regard to the protection of the country’s children, says state minister of children’s affairs Rosie Senanayake.

Speaking to the media, she said there is an increase, not any sign of a reduction, in child abuse.

She condemned the rape and murder of Jaffna schoolgirl Vidya Yogeswaran, and stressed the need to create a country that abides by the law.

Mrs. Senanayake went onto say that there was a big question about the enforcement of the law against the criminals, even after the public caught them and handed them over to police.

Appealing to the entire society to rise up against such crime, she asked the people to place any information regarding child abuse before the law.
