Prepared to dissolve parliament even tonight - President Featured

President Maithripala Sirisena says that if the Parliamentary Group of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) calls to dissolve parliament without passing the 20th Amendment, he is prepared to do so even tonight.

The President was speaking at a United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Parliamentary Group meeting held at the Presidential secretariat last night.

He was responding after several MPs including SLFP MP Jayaratne Herath called to dissolve parliament immediately.

However, the majority of MPs at the meeting have urged not to dissolve parliament until the 20th Amendment has been passed.

No 20A this week

Meanwhile, Leader of the House - minister Lakshman Kiriella  said that the 20th Amendment would not be tabled before parliament this week as there is no clear consensus among minority parties over electoral reforms.

He added that he is not sure when it would be possible for the Amendment to be tabled in parliament due to differing viewpoints on the matter.
