'Swan' symbol for Gen. election as well?

'Swan' symbol for Gen. election as well? Featured

Several bigwigs of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) are sorely attempting to obtain the agreement of President Maithripala Sirisena to contest the upcoming General election as a broad front under the symbol of the 'swan', political sources say.
Sources add that these bigwigs, together with representatives of several political parties that backed Maithripala Sirisena during the January Presidential polls, have held initial discussions on this regard, last week.

They are yet to arrive at a concession and further discussions are to be held in the near future.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party led by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has already stated their assent on the matter, reports say.

However, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has already stated their intention to go solo at the general election while the United National Party too, is preparing to contest under the 'elephant' symbol.

Maithripala Sirisena contested the Presidential election in January under the 'swan' symbol of the New Democratic Front.
