The post was earlier held by Mahinda Rajapaksa's son - Yoshitha Rajapaksa.

Guneratne is among the several MPs who are of the opinion that Mahinda Rajapaksa should be made the next prime ministerial candidate from the SLFP.

He is the only Gampaha District MP who is of that opinion.
