The Central Bank recently issued for circulation a new currency note of Rs. 5,000, and it contains an English signature.

The signature of Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake is in Sinhala, but Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran has signed in English on the obverse of the note.

A signature in English of a Central Bank Governor appears on a local currency note after 27 years.

An English signature of the then Governor Dr. Neville Karunatilake was on currency notes issued in 1988.

However, Mahendran signed the Sinhala edition of the CB’s 2014 report in Sinhala.
