The constitutional council will be appointed before the next general election in order to facilitate the appointment of independent commissions, said UNP general secretary, minister Kabir Hashim.

Speaking to the media in Colombo today (04), he said the passage of the 20th amendment would take time, although the SLFP wants it adopted before the parliamentary polls.

Therefore, the next election will be held under the existing system, he said.

The minister said it was still undecided as to whether the general election or the polls for local government bodies would take place first.

Since most LG bodies have completed their tenure, their administration would be handed over to special commissioners, he added.
