Foreign affairs minister Mangala Samaraweera stated that the three journalists who had fled the country during the Rajapaksa regime and sought political asylum in Nepal returned to the island last night (29).

The three journalists, Shantha Wijewardena, Jayampathy Bulathsinhala and Kumuduni Wijewardena, have reportedly had a narrow escape when the earthquake occurred.

The foreign affairs minister at the parliament assured that they would be brought home within days.

The minister was responding to a charge by DNA’s Anura Kumara Dissanayake that the government had not paid attention to the plight of these journalists in the wake of the earthquake that devastated Nepal.

Professional Web Journalists' Association (PWJA) recently informed the government that the lives of several Sri Lankan journalists, who fled the country for safety reasons and now living in exile in Nepal, are in danger and requested to take due measures to ensure their safe return.

However, both the foreign affairs minister and Sri Lankan Ambassador to Nepal W.M. Seneviratne had made a great effort to bring back these journalists.
