Mahinda loyalists in impeachment conspiracy!

Mahinda loyalists in impeachment conspiracy! Featured

A minority group of SLFP MPs, who are powerful Mahinda Rajapaksa loyalists and are against Maithripala Sirisena, is discussing a possible impeachment of the president on the grounds that he had intentionally contravened the constitution and gone against the state.

Their plan is to deny the president the power to dissolve parliament, gain control of government and then go for a parliamentary election.

As per provisions of the constitution, an impeachment motion to be handed over to the speaker against the president should have signatures of a two-third of the MPs.

However, a petition signed by more than half the MPs could be accepted by the speaker, if he is satisfied that there were grounds for the Supreme Court to look into the matter.

At a meeting with citizens’ groups on April 20, the president said that he intended to dissolve parliament after the debate on the 19th amendment, even if it is not passed.

Parliament is expected to be dissolved on May 05, Ravaya reports.
