There was speculation that Peacock Palace was to be given to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Speaking to Sri Lanka Mirror, Liyanage said, “Lanka is in debt to the world. Is it a big thing that I am indebted to a financial institution? How can we evade income tax without borrowing?”
He said he has no debt other than for Peacock Palace, a big investment, which he has undertaken with wisdom.
A weekend Sinhala newspaper said the place had been mortgaged to find money for Liyanage’s businesses.
It added attempts had been made to sell Peacock Palace for Rs. 450 million.
