House debate on 19th amendment on Apr. 21, 22 - UPFA

Party leaders have agreed today to present the 19th amendment in parliament excluding the new changes, while including only the changes recommended by the Supreme Court.

Chief Opposition Whip W.D.J. Seneviratne said that this decision was taken during a special party leaders’ meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat this morning.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also attended this meeting which was held under the patronage of the President.

Accordingly the draft bill of the 19th amendment which was previously due to be presented in parliament tomorrow, will be taken up for debate on Tuesday and Wednesday.

SLFP has previously stated that the amendments to the electoral system should be presented along with the draft bill of the 19th amendment.

However, Chief Opposition Whip W.D.J. Seneviratne stated that during today’s party leaders’ meeting, it was agreed to present the amendments to the electoral system later.

When asked whether SLFP would cast their votes in favor of the 19th amendment, he stated that the parliamentary group will convene a meeting tonight under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena to discuss regarding the matter

Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva stated that they will decide tomorrow whether to cast their votes in favor of the 19th amendment.

All parties agreed to debate on Supreme Court approved sections of the 19th Amendment in Parliament on 21 and 22 April, General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Minister Susil Premajayantha, said.
