Court sanctions 19th amendment

The Supreme Court, after considering the petitions filed in support of and against the 19th amendment to the constitution, has sent its verdict to the speaker of parliament, and that ruling says the president should retain the power to appoint and remove ministers, say judicial sources.

A referendum should be held if that power is to be removed, the SC is of the view.

Other than that, the other amendments in the draft bill could be adopted by 2/3 parliamentary majority.

The SC sent its ruling to the speaker on April 07.

The intention when formulating the draft amendment was to get it passed in parliament without going for a referendum.
