Paranagama committee to be boycotted!

Paranagama committee to be boycotted! Featured

Relatives of missing persons have decided to boycott the presidential commission on disappearances when it holds proceedings in Ampara.

The reason for their opposition is that the commission, appointed by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, is carrying on sans results and without any changes despite a new government being in power.

K. Ganesh, an activist of the Ampara association of missing person’s relatives, said they have no faith at all on this commission.

He noted the commission has said that it has so far investigated a mere 2,000 complaints out of a total of around 20,000 complaints all these years.

Ganesh said they would only submit a common report on disappearances in the district, and will not make representations on individual cases.

More than 3,000 instances of disappearances have been reported from Kalmunai, Ninthavur, Alaiadivembu, Samanthurai, Pothuvil, Akkarapattu and Tirukkovil during the past few decades.

Opposition to committee

The commission has announced that it would conduct sittings in Ampara on April 06, 07 and 08.

Following calls from across the country, President Maithripala Sirisena extended the term of the commission until August 15.

Headed by Maxwell Paranagama, it conducted hearings in Trincomalee and Batticaloa last month.

TNA spokesman Suresh Premachandran too, has said that they do not have any faith in the commission.

Report put off

ampara protestParanagama had said an interim report would be handed over to coincide with the release of the UNHRC report in Geneva on March 18.

However, at the request of the new government, the UNHRC put off the report, and so did the Paranagama commission.

According to reports, the commission report will not be publicized until September, jdslanka.org reports.
