Baby born with 'trunk' worshipped as 'Ganesha's wife'

Baby born with 'trunk' worshipped as 'Ganesha's wife' Featured

A baby girl born with a 'trunk' has become a big attraction in Aligarh, where people are flocking to worship her. They believe her to be an incarnation of lord Ganesha.

The child was born on Thursday with a protuberance between her two eyes which people believe resembles the trunk of the elephant god.

As news spread of her birth, visitors swarmed the house of Om Prakash and Sarvesh in Kothi Lankram in the city and made offerings to her.
Some even nicknamed her 'Lord Ganpatni' meaning 'Ganesha's wife'. She is the fourth child in the family and her father believes she will bring him luck.

"Her face looks exactly like Lord Ganesha. Everybody is saying she is an incarnation of the god. This is why many are coming here to get a glimpse of the baby and are making whatever offerings possible,"  the baby's aunt Rajani said.

Doctors said the protrusion is a result of gene mutation that can be caused by malnutrition and increased pollution levels. If the family chooses, they can go for a corrective surgery at a later stage, doctors said.

"A baby boy was born with a trunk some time back also. Unfortunately, he didn't survive. But if this girl does, the family can go for corrective surgery."  Dr Jayant Sharma from Jeevan Hospital told the Times of India.

But medical explanations have not deterred the hundreds who turn up to 'worship' her.

"I believe this baby is an incarnation of Lord Ganesha and hence I have come here. I feel very peaceful having come here," said Neelam, a visitor.
