Head of the Vavuniya citizen’s committee Krishnapillai Devarasa has been summoned to appear before the TID.

Police on March 26 handed over the summons to his newspaper stall at Nedunkerni.

Devarasa has been a key organizer of the series of recent protests over the disappearance of people from the north and the east, including one demonstration in Vavuniya.

The protesters demanded an international inquiry, saying they do not have faith in the local investigations into war crimes and disappearances.

Devarasa organized the protest in front of the Vauvuniya district secretariat in October to call for the release of Jeyakumari and other political prisoners detained under the PTA.

He was injured and hospitalized following an attack and also received anonymous phone calls threatening him with death.

The then authorities in the area had intimidated him to make a plea through his citizen’s committee to support Mahinda Rajapaksa at the presidential election.

Devarasa has told JDS that he has been summoned to the TID to record a statement in connection with an investigation into incidents in Vavuniya.

He said this could be over the protest they had organized to express their dissatisfaction over the new government’s measures to resolve issues of the Tamils.
