Deputy minister of Foreign Affairs - Ajith P. Perera has said that it has been decided to suspend the appointment of Kshenuka Seneviratne as the Sri Lankan ambassador in Thailand.

The final decision on this regard would be taken on the directives of the parliamentary committee on High Posts, the deputy minister said added.

The matter, which was not taken up at the last committee meeting, would be taken up at the next one, he added.

The Committee on High Posts examines the suitability of persons who have been either appointed to any post or nominated to hold office in any post determined by the Cabinet of Ministers and to make recommendations in regard to such persons. At present the following categories of Officers are examined by the Committee.

1) All Secretaries to Cabinet Ministries
2) All persons proposed to be appointed as Heads of Sri Lanka Missions abroad
3) Chairmen of Boards, Corporations and other State Institutions

of late, several political parties including the JVP had criticised the appointment of Kshenuka Seneviratne as Ambassador to Thailand, prior to the conclusion of investigations into the refurbishment of the residence of the permanent representative of Geneva during her tenure.

During the recent past she had been under fire for handing over the renovation of the embassy to an LTTE supportive construction company, while she was serving as Lankan ambassador Geneva.

However, speaking at recent a TV interview, Foreign minister Mangala Samaraweera said that the renovations were done before Ms. Seneviratne had assumed duties in the post.
