Indo - SL fishermen discussions, regressive Featured

Convenor of the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement, Herman Kumara says that the present round of talks between representatives of fishermen of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka are even more regressive than similar discussions initiated in 2010.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', he further said, "According to the discussions in 2010, it was agreed to allow Indian fishermen to fish in Lankan waters for 70 days using non-harmful equipment under the condition that all Indian fishermen should remove themselves from Lankan waters within one year after that... However, it did not happen."

"Now, in 2015, they are making a similar call. This should not be agreed to. Agreeing to it would be a grievous injustice to Lankan fishermen... Who will vouch that they will be removed in 03 years' time? And how can we trust that non-harmful equipment would not be used?."

Therefore, we should take matters into serious consideration before taking decisions at this discussion, he further said.

Earlier, Indian media reported that Lankan fishermen agreed to Indian fishermen fishing in Sri Lankan water for 83 days per year or the next three years but is yet to make a formal announcement.
