JHU warns anti-reformists

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has warned political parties and organizations that try to oppose the proposed reforms.

The JHU says the government needs to pay attention to the requirements of the public when decided on the electoral reforms rather than the needs of the political parties and organizations.

General Secretary of the JHU, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said at a seminar at the New Town Hall in Colombo that the victorious party at the general election should get the majority in parliament and minor parties such as the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) should also receive due representation in the new electoral system.

Ranawaka explained that changing the executive presidential system and establishing independent commissions alone were insufficient, and that the electoral system should also be changed.

The JHU Minister also claimed the party would not hesitate to defeat those who try to scuttle political reforms in the same manner the former president was defeated.

He added that the JHU was of the opinion that excessive powers of the executive presidency should be pruned rather than completely abolishing them in order to ensure stability of the country and its security.
