48-hr detention law shelved Featured

The draft to detain a suspect for questioning for 48-hours has been submitted to the Parliament on Tuesday (17) in order to extend it for another two years.

However, the passing of the bill was postponed.

The draft has been submitted to the Parliament by the Dr. Vikramabahu Karunaratne.

Speaking to the Parliament, the Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe pointed out that this draft has to be scrutinized accurately and can be focused later.

Former Minister of External Affairs Prof. G. L. Peiris also shared his views in this regard at the Parliament.

Speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror', executive secretary of Right to Life Human Rights Organization - Philip Dissanayake stated that there are international standards that need to be maintained when detaining suspects.

Noting that police officers should produce all suspects arrested without a warrant before a magistrate, Dissanayake said that lengthening the detention time would lead to a rise in torturing suspects during interrogation.
