Karannagoda seeks promotion to 5-star Admiral ranking Featured

Former Navy commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda has written to president Maithripala Sirisena, requesting that he be promoted to the rank of five-star Admiral of the Fleet.

The letter, dated January 15, notes that since 1992, the three service commanders were promoted to the next higher rank on the day of their retirement, as a mark of appreciation for their services to the country.

He notes, however, that after an allegation that Gen. Sarath Fonseka was planning a coup, the Army commander as well as himself were made to retire hurriedly on 15 July 2009.

Admiral Karannagoda notes media reports that Gen. Fonseka is now being considered for promotion to the rank of Field Marshal.

In addition to the five-star Admiral of the Fleet ranking, he also asks that he be given the block of land at Kiri Mandala Mawatha, acquired by the UDA.
