10 Tamils arriving in Lanka arrested

10 Tamils arriving in Lanka arrested Featured

The TID has arrested nearly 10 Tamils at the Katunayake airport alone, following their return from the Middle East, Australia, Italy and other countries on an invitation by the new government for them to come back to the motherland, jdslanka.org website reports.

Although the government claims a free and peaceful environment has been created for all citizens to live in freedom, the returnees continue to get arrested.

The most recent incident took place on March 02.

According to media reports, a 41-year-old Murugesu Bhagiradi and her daughter, aged eight years, were arrested by the TID at the airport.

After 10 years, the woman had come from France to see her mother who suffers from cancer.

They had been taken as they were to leave for France, being detained for 72 hours and under interrogation at the 4th floor.

TID officials say Bhagiradi had been a Sea Tiger member 15 years ago, and that she is now working to revive the LTTE.

She had been a Sea Tiger activist from 1997-2000, but had left the organization after suffering serious injuries.

Later, she gained French citizenship, married a Sri Lankan in Thailand, and left for France in 2005.

Bhagiradi had returned to Sri Lanka on February 03 to see her ailing mother after placing her trust in the free atmosphere crearted by the new government of good governance, say her relatives.

On February 13, TID officials had visited her at her Paranthan home and recorded a statement.

Police say her husband Subramaniam Jayaganesh handles international financial affairs of the LTTE.

Bhagiradi has legally separated from him, and he pays a monthly alimony for her and their daughter.

The daughter, Pahalvi, should be in France for her new school term on March 03, and they were to be back there by the previous day, the mother has told the TID.

Bhagiradi’s brother has told the TID that it was pointless to detain her, or her daughter, with the aim of getting Jayaganesh to come to Sri Lanka, as they are legally separated now.
