Call to probe 2010 match-fixing probe cover-up

Call to probe 2010 match-fixing probe cover-up Featured

Sri Lanka Cricket executive committee member Shammi Silva has asked the sports minister to appoint a special committee to investigate a match fixing incident said to have taken place in 2010 in Dambulla during the Indian tour.

A committee that was appointed at the ex-co meeting on December 02 last year to probe the incident did not get the expected support from cricket chiefs.

There was another allegation that during the India-Lanka series in June 2010, a woman had visited an Indian placer in his hotel room, which was verified in an investigation against former India cricket chief N. Sirinivasan Venkataragavan.

Text of Shammi Silva’s letter:

Hon. Navin Dissaniayaka
Minister of Tourism & Sports
Ministry of Sports
Colombo 7

Honorable Sir,

I wish to draw your kind attention to a letter sent to the President, Sri Lanka Cricket on 11 February 2015 giving reference to a Match Fixing incident reported in Dambulla. (The relevant article dated 19/11/2014 downloaded from the internet and also the same article appeared in the Daily Mirror on the same date are attached for your reference, please.)

Considering the importance of the subject matter, I kindly request you to appoint a special committee to investigate the above matter as early as possible. As this is a very important matter pending for a long time without proper inquiry or investigation, it is very essential to hold an inquiry by the Ministry of Sports in order to avoid unnecessary interference by vested interest personalities.

Hon. Sir, it is also important to record statements from all relevant parties who are involved in this incident reported at Dambulla. You may also be aware by perusing the attached documents the incident had not been treated in an ethical manner due to reasons best known to the administrators who held office during the said period.

I am sure as a Minister who has an unstinted back ground for cricket, you will take necessary steps to safeguard the interest of the gentlemen’s game which was lacking in the past few years due to the unethical practices by some vested parties.

Thank you,
Yours Faithfully,

Shammi Silva
Executive Committee Member

Cc: President – Sri Lanka Cricket
All EX-CO Members
