Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva yesterday (19) requested the government to reveal its stance on the alleged war crimes allegations levelled against the country and future steps that would be taken on the issue.
The Opposition Leader made this request while making a special statement under Standing Orders 23.2 in parliament.
“I request the government to inform the House whether it has made a promise to prepare a procedure to execute justice regarding the alleged war crimes and to produce the letters sent by the Foreign Affairs Minister to the United Nations Human Rights Commission on the matter. I further request the government to declare its stance on the resolution passed by the Northern Provincial Council that an international investigation should be conducted regarding the alleged war crimes as well as the steps the government has planned to take in order to defeat a possible international investigation and to improve the country's image,” De Silva said.
In reply, Chief Government Whip Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said that the government would present its response on the matter today (20).
