Fonseka seizes Army’s control, to become field marshal Featured

Former Army commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka is to become a field marshal by next week, say reliable sources, making him the first Sri Lankan to hold that military ranking.

He pioneered the victory against terrorism, but lost his ranking and privileges after contesting the 2010 presidential election on a charge of provoking soldiers against the state.

On a promise at the recent presidential election, president Maithripala Sirisena handed him a pardon and restored his ranking and all privileges.

Wife too, gets posting

Gen. Fonseka’s wife Anoma was yesterday (18) appointed chairperson of Ranaviru Seva Authority.

Her brother, SSP Ajith Munasinghe, is to be promoted as a DIG.

Key Army positions go to friends

The new government recently appointed several major generals and brigadiers, who were punished for their loyalty to Gen. Fonseka, to key positions in the Army.

Friend as Army chief

Meanwhile, government and Army sources say there are several in contention to be the next Army commander.

They are major generals Krishantha Silva, Prasad Samarasinghe, J.C.
Rambukpotha, L.W.C.B.B. Rajaguru, Milinda Peiris, S.W.L. Davulugala, R.M.J.A. Ratnayake and Jagath Dias.

However, Gen. Fonseka is trying to get someone loyal to him appointed as the new commander.
