25 years since Richard de Zoysa’s murder Featured

Today marks 25 years since the murder of Richard de Zoysa, journalist, artiste and human rights activist.

He was abducted on the night of 18 February 1990, and his dead body was found at the Koralawella beach on the following day.

The then government was accused over the murder, but the abductors were not revealed.

While watching television news a few days after his murder, Richard’s mother Manorani Sarawanamuttu identified SP Ronnie Gunasinghe as the leader of the group that abducted her son.

She complained to courts, and an arrest order was issued, but Gunasinghe was not arrested.

It later transpired, that the then state defence minister Ranjan Wijeratne had ordered police not to arrest the SP.

On 01, May 1993, Gunasinghe was killed in the Armour Street LTTE suicide bomb attack that targeted president Ranasinghe Premadasa.

Justice was yet to be done to any of those killed during that period.
