President calls for national unity

President Maithripala Sirisena today (04) called for national unity, saying that the country has failed to connect the hearts of people in the North and South although the war was put to an end in 2009.

Speaking at the 67th Independence Day anniversary celebrations at Parliament grounds today, the President noted that there was a great need to do this through a national reconcilliation programme.

The president further said that eradication of  poverty will be given priority and that a  balanced foreign policy will be adopted.

A statement of peace was also read out during the Independence Day anniversary celebrations at Parliament grounds today.
