Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe told Parliament today (January 30) that the manner in which chief justice Shirani Bandaranayake was removed was unjust while the conduct of her replacement Mohan Peiris to cling onto the post was appalling.

Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva and Member of Parliament Dinesh Gunawardena had earlier requested Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to explain the government's role in the reinstatement of Shirani Bandaranayake and the exit of Peiris.

Wickremasinghe in response drew the attention of the House that Peiris had been at the former President's official residence at Temple Trees on the night election results were poring in which was unbecoming of his status as the Chief Justice who had also declared that he (Peiris) will ensure all court verdicts are given in favour of the new government under President Maithripala Sirisena.

Prime Minister Wickremasinghe also said that Peiris' utterances only proved he will not be able to ensure justice was meted out while at the same time he was also the head of several business companies.

As Wickremasinghe clarified the government's position, Opposition MP Wimal Weerawansa and a group of MPs began to disrupt proceedings that prompted a government group to react.

The Speaker then suspended Parliament sittings for twenty minutes.
