The Council is a high level government advisory committee made up of the President, Prime Minister and nine leaders of Political parties.
It was set up on a proposal made by JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The National Executive Council has unanimously decided to pass a resolution that will make Members of Parliament lose their seats and status in the event of crossovers from one party to another.
