The visit will be the first high level diplomatic visit between the two countries since the new government in the island nation took over.

Samaraweera decided to visit India after receiving an invite from his counterpart Sushma Swaraj, which was followed by a formal invitation.

This will be minister Samaraweera's first foreign visit after assuming duties as the minister of foreign affairs.
