Around 40 MPs of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have pledged to back the 100-day work programme of President Maithripala Sirisena.

They have held discussions with former Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on this regard, reports add.

Accordingly, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's attempt to appoint Nimal Siripala de Silva as Prime Minister instead of Ranil Wickremesinghe would be foiled.

Meanwhile, speaking to 'BBC Sandeshaya', MP Wijayadasa Rajapaksha said that the UPFA would back the reforms introduced by the new government.

Noting that discussions with UPFA senior parliamentarians are already underway, he added that it has become apparent that the parliament would back worthy deeds.
