In the four days of the New Year leading up to the election as many as 56 MPs and Provincial Council members have changed sides with 24 joining President Mahinda Rajapaksa while Common Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena attracted 32.

Of this number eight members from the Vavuniya Urban Council, three UNPers from the Ginigathhena PC and 13 members from the Janatha Kandurata Peramuna teamed up with the President.

Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake and three others, 17 Provincial Council members from Polonnaruwa, the deputy chairman of the Panadura UC, one Kundasale PC member, three members from the Kobeigama PC along with PC members from the Mulatiyana, Ambalangoda and Kurunegala teamed up with Maithripala Sirisena.
