He charged that the only thing that Mahinda Rajapaksa did with his 2/3 majority in parliament was to pass the 18th Amendment to the Constitution that guarantees him to be in the Executive Presidency for life.
Ven. Sobitha Thera said that the powers of the Executive Presidency were such that former Army commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka who played a major role in defeating the Tigers and ending the war was given a "jumper" and thrown into prison.
"What it did (the Executive Presidency) was send Sarath Fonseka to prison and whitewash (terrorist leaders) KP and Karuna with vice presidency posts. What we need is a country where the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and all other communities can live in harmony with one another", said Ven. Sobitha Thera addressing a function held today (December 2) at the Public Library in Colombo.
