At the time they visited Kataragama a large number of devotees were also present being New Year's Day.
Devotees are said to have rallied around Namal to wish him success at election campaigns.
The three sons of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, MP Namal, Yoshitha and Rohitha along with his wife Shiranthi visited the Kataragama Shrine today (January 1) to invoke the blessings of the deities.
