Leaders of the joint opposition have held several rounds of discussions with regard to the proposal, and a final decision is expected within days, it says.
When contacted, Amaraweera confirmed to Sri Lanka Mirror that he has sent a special message to the joint opposition.
That message stressed the need for the joint opposition to unite with the SLFP led by president Maithripala Sirisena, he said, adding a majority of MPs in the joint opposition has already responded favourably.
The proposal has hinted about the position ex-president Rajapaksa should have under such a union, he added.
