President Maithripala Sirisena accepted the resignation letter tendered by Bribery Commission director general Dilrukshi Wickremasinghe, said the president’s media unit.

At the cabinet media briefing today (19), government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne leveled serious allegations against Wickremasinghe, based on what the president had told ministers a day earlier.

Senaratne accused her of having sabotaged investigations into charges that family members of ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa had maintained bank accounts in Dubai city.

He went onto claim that she had leaked details of a confidential document signed by the president in this regard.

Probe into Rajapaksas’ Dubai accounts

Giving details, he said, that one day, Wickremasinghe had gone to meet the president to discuss initiating investigations into these Dubai bank accounts, and to obtain his signature for a letter seeking Dubai’s assistance to conduct the investigations.

An hour later, the president received a phone call from Mahinda Rajapaksa, who inquired as to whether he had signed a document to probe the Dubai accounts, said Senaratne.

With this incident, the transparency of investigations by the Bribery Commission had come into question, said the minister.

Senaratne also said anyone watching the full video of remarks by the president would see that he had not expressed displeasure over ex-defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa being taken to courts.

He accused the media of having added Gotabhaya to the president’s reference to the ex-Navy commanders.

The president has also criticized the conduct of the state media, he added.
