It had been estimated that Rs. 30 million would have to be spent for each of the prisons - Welikada, Remand and Magazine.

Prison spokesman Thushara Upuldeniya said the idea was abandoned due to the cost factor.

However, all three prisons would have CCTV cameras installed at their entrances by the end of the year.
