The girl child is the most vulnerable segment of society to abuse, says women and children’s affairs ministry secretary Chandrani Senaratne.

The gender based concepts in society have, knowingly or unknowingly, created injustices for the girl child, she told a function in Colombo yesterday (11) to mark international day of the girl child.

All should consider girl child as a beautiful creation of the nature, Senaratne said.

Free education has allowed girls to surpass boys, but they should now think beyond education, the ministry secretary added.

Chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority Dr. Natasha Balendra said the girl child was more exposed to abuse at home, school etc.

Boys have a key role to play in ensuring safety for girls, said Balendra.

Meanwhile, 216 girls had been abused at certain children’s homes in the central province, said provincial governor Niluka Ekanayake.

She said children’s homes in the province would hereafter be called children development centres.
