FTZ Union writes to Foreign Minister on Rights issue

Human rights in a good governance regime that promises to respect democracy and rule of law cannot forget workers' rights, says the FTZ & General Services Employees' Union, in a letter sent to the Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

Signed by Joint Secretary of the Union, Anton Marcus in a strongly worded letter quoting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and ILO Conventions 87 & 98 says, "Yet these fundamental rights for workers have not been considered as democratic and human rights, nor given any attention in any of the mechanisms promised for democracy, rule of law and good governance by the present "Unity" government."

Also referring to government efforts in regaining the EU GSP 'Plus', the letter says workers' rights have not been properly addressed even that application either.
