Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe urges SAARC leaders to pay attention on how to act against cross-border terrorism in the region.

He made the request at a media briefing during his tour of India.

The Indian prime minister’s patience in dealing with heated up situations of cross-border terrorism is commendable, he said.

Wickremesinghe met with Indian president Pranab Mukherjee yesterday (05) in New Delhi for bilateral talks.

He conveyed an invitation to Mukherjee from his Sri Lankan counterpart Maithripala Sirisena to visit the island in order to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

The Sri Lankan premier commended the Indian government for its role in establishing peace in the region.

Meeting with Modi
Meanwhile, Wickremesinghe met with Indian PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi yesterday.

Modi said on the occasion that the two countries enjoyed a level of friendship that went beyond the diplomatic level, said Wickremesinghe’s office in a statement.

That friendship will help expand ties in various fields of the two countries, he said.

Regional peace
The two leaders stressed the need to obtain contributions from all SAARC member nations in efforts to eliminate terrorism and establish peace.

Strategies for sustainable development and peace in the region, including the problems faced by SAARC, also came under discussion.

Meanwhile, Wickremesinghe met with Indian external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.

The Indian minister reiterated commitment for a future in which bilateral friendships were further strengthened.

Fishermen’s issue
She also highlighted the need to find a lasting solution for the Indo-Lanka fishermen’s issue.

A decision was taken to hold a meeting of foreign affairs and fisheries ministers of the two countries in November to discuss the matter.

With Congress leaders
The Sri Lankan prime minister also had a meeting with Indian Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was also present, said the national government formed in Sri Lanka by the two main parties could obtain support of the TNA and other parties.

This is a significant achievement made by Sri Lanka in the recent past, he said.
