The committee says many irregularities had taken place at the Department, in which its officials had been involved.
They include the registration of vehicles imported without documents, registration of cars imported under the pretext of motor cycles and the registration of vehicles imported by defrauding customs levies.
Some of the suspect officers have been given transfers.
Following an exposure by the Auditor General’s Department that less tariff dues had been paid for five Prado jeeps imported in 2014-15, the CID launched an investigation.
However, no progress has been made in the investigation, as the Motor Traffic Department has not provided the required documents.
Also, the state lost an income of Rs. 15 million due to the importation of five cars on the pretext of motor cycles.
COPA chairman Lasantha Alagiyawanna said a solution to overcome the issues would be the connection of the Customs and the Motor Traffic Department through a computer network.
He said the committee investigated 38 state institutions and 238 matters relating to them were referred to the auditor general.
