Rt. Rev. Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has thanked the president and the prime minster for giving an assurance that Buddhism would continue to have the same place under a new constitution, bbc.com/sinhala reports.

He warned of an attempt to destroy Sri Lanka’s spiritual lifestyle by forcing upon her the western concept of a secular state.

The cardinal was speaking at a function to mark the 100th anniversary of Holy Cross Church in Gampaha.

He insisted clause nine in the present constitution should not be touched.

Religious and communal harmony was essential in the journey for a new era after ending a 30 year war, he added.
