Pirith was chanted at the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha, on Sunday and an alms giving to 70 bhikkhus was held yesterday. A special working committee meeting of the party is scheduled to be held today at Sirikotha.

The UNP was founded on 6 September 1946 by the late D. S. Senanayake after resigning from the Ceylon National Congress. The UNP has been in power from 1947 to 1956, from 1965 to 1970, from 1977 to 1994 and from 2001 to 2004 and from 2015 to date.
