Land theft on the pretext of offering million jobs!

Land theft on the pretext of offering million jobs! Featured

Primary Industries Minister Daya Gamage had written to the Ampara  Divisional Forest Officer, requesting the transfer of 107 hectares of Forest Department land in the Galoya valley for an Investment Board project.

 In the letter to the forest officer No. MP/AMP/79 dated 2016.08.28, the minister had requested the 107 hectares to be released for high agricultural region and Investment Board projects which will create over a million employment opportunities.

The minister pointed out that the 107 hectares situated on the Udayapura Hill road in the Uhana PS division, was utilised to establish a housing colony under the Galoya Development Board project, but due to the rocky and unfertile terrain the residents had later vacated the area.

In his letter to the wild life officer, the minister pointed out that this land was later used by the Forest department as a forestry project, but that too proved unsuccessful.

Misguiding, threatening officials

The minister’s sinister plan to fraudulently obtain this land by misleading the officers is very evident as he has initially stated in the letter that the said land is a high agricultural region and later contradicting it claiming the land is unfertile.

The letter further states that the wild life officer prioritise this matter and expeditiously forward his recommendations to the Wildlife Director General, in order to release the said land to the Uhana Regional Secretary.

He further stated that if the said project is delayed and the money allocated for this year is not utilised, the envisaged million jobs target by 2020 will not be realised in the event the project fails.

This sort of pressurising by the minister is a clear indication of his shameless ploy in order to force the forest department to hand over this land to him.

The letter issued by the minister under his signature is published below;
